Hello again! We invite you to read a new chapter of our Blog about Atopic Dermatitis. It’s July and the desire for holidays, beach and heat is growing. That’s why we want to talk to you today about how to look after atopic skin this summer. We tell you how to protect yourself and what to consider on your next holiday – read on!
HOW TO CARE FOR ATOPIC SKIN IN SUMMER
Summer can be a difficult time for people with eczema. High temperatures, sun and sweat can make symptoms worse, but with the right care it is possible to enjoy the season without major problems.
What is your favourite thing about summer? Go to the swimming pool? Maybe the beach? Or do you like to play or lie in the sun? Whatever you choose… Don’t let atopic dermatitis ruin your holiday. So… how can I protect myself from possible outbreaks?
- In the swimming pool, protect yourself from chlorine. It may irritate the skin. Make sure you rinse thoroughly after leaving the pool to remove any chlorine residue.
- On the beach, protect yourself from the sea water. Swimming in the sea and enjoying the sand is wonderful, but if you have recently had an outbreak and have been scratching, the salt water can cause burning. If this happens, rinse your skin thoroughly with fresh water and apply an atopic dermatitis cream to the affected area. We recommend DermControl.
- Outdoors, protect yourself from the sun. A little sun can be beneficial for people with atopic skin, but it is important to protect it properly. Apply a sunscreen specially formulated for atopic skin to avoid burning.
- At certain times of the day, protect yourself from the heat. It is important to avoid the hottest hours and intense exposure to the sun. Choose to go outside or enjoy these activities in the morning or afternoon when temperatures are more moderate. Excessive heat in summer can cause sweating, which is irritating and can lead to outbreaks.
HOW ATOPIC DERMATITIS CAN AFFECT US WHEN IT COMES TO SHOWING OFF OUR BODIES
Atopic dermatitis is a visible condition and this can sometimes affect self-esteem and confidence, especially when it comes to showing more of our bodies in the summer. Here are some tips on how to handle this situation:
- Acceptance: Remember that atopic dermatitis is just a part of you, it does not define who you are. Self-acceptance is key.
- Education: Learn about your condition and share this information with your friends and family. Understanding and support from others can make a big difference.
- Skin care: Maintain a consistent skin routine. See the previous article, Basic skin care for children, for everything you need to know about caring for your child’s skin.
With these tips, there’s no reason why atopic dermatitis should stop you from enjoying your holidays! Take care of your skin and enjoy the sun responsibly.
